Now it is that June has come
Like other Junes that we have known:
Wysteria and columns in the sun,
Soft glittering nights for us to own.

A wisp of moon far down the sky.
All distance in a single star.
The slow sweet spell of lassitude.
Mint leaves and music from afar.

Blue of the Blue Ridge in the west.
The smell of June-her taste and touch.
Ecstasy-and time stands still
And nothing matters very much.

But never yet has man escaped
The spectre of tomorrow's days
Nor kept the past alive and green:
The years slide on and man obeys.

We go now:
One more line of caps and gowns,
Processional upon the Lawn,
Hilarious sadness in it all.
A speech and music-then the dawn.

But

This was our school; it will be ours.
The Thing, that Thing that conquers words
Has touched us irrevocably.
Classes and grades: the formal side,
Even the names of those we love
We will forget.

But The Thing
We will never forget.
