Texas Live Stock and Agricultural Journal. Vol. I No. 1. Saint Jo, Texas, January 15, 1892

Ask any U.S. researching genealogist and they'll probably say that the loss of the 1890 U.S. Census was one of the most devastating events in history. 😆 It's been endlessly frustrating to me being unable to easily track ancestors in between 1880-1900. There are city directories, church records and the like that can help fill in some of the gap, but they're not always easy to locate. That's partly why I was so excited to find this Texas Live Stock and Agricultural Journal published in 1892. Filled with advertisers and other names, I hope it might help someone who is searching, place their ancestor somewhere within that gap.

SALUTATORY: The lawyer, doctor, schoolteachers and preacher have their papers, without which they could hardly hope for any great measure of success; so also, the manufacturer, artisan and artist, in a word, every calling and profession. The farmer, too, is well supplied in the older states with journals suitable to his pursuits. In Texas, however, there are many counties in which not a copy of an agricultural paper circulates. This is especially true of the North and Northwestern ones, and Indian and Oklahoma Territories may be classed with this section. Not a farmer or stockman in these territories is a subscriber for an agricultural or stock journal. It is a little singular that in the entire region above noted, not one of the three excellent papers published in this state devoted to farm and stock interests in known. THE TEXAS LIVE STOCK AND AGRICULTURAL JOURNAL was planned and established therefore to give the north and northwestern part of the state and territories above named an organ especially designed for the development of their stock and agricultural interests. THE JOURNAL will exercise a wide influence in directing the attention of prospective settlers to these sections, by making known the fertility of the soil, salubrity of climate, adaptability for stock raising and manifold other advantages offered to immigrants.

Undoubtedly They Can: G. B. LAKE, of Henrietta, Texas, asks the JOURNAL: "Can cows and horses be as well developed in Texas as in Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, etc?" . . .

Possibilities in Texas: Six years ago Antonio FENOLIO, an Italian, settled six miles east of Montague, Texas. He purchased land on credit, living in an old adobe house. Now he has a comfortable dwelling, outbuildings, a farm in a high state of cultivation, an orchard of apples, pears, peach and plum tree, besides a vineyard of five acres, containing eleven different varieties of grapes, from which, last season he made fifty barrels of wine.

MUENSTER COLONY

The thriving colony of Muenster was started in January, 1890, by Messrs. GUNTER and WELLESLEY, and is situated in Cooke county, Texas, on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. Through the untiring efforts of the founders, Gunter and Wellesley, aided by their efficient agent, Mr. Henry RICHTER, the colony has been a success since the start. Muenster is a flourishing town with hotels, dry goods, hardware and other stores, a commodious church under the charge of Father Blum and a fine school taught by the Sisters of Providence, while the surrounding country is being rapidly opened up by farmers. The settlers are Germans from all over the country, and extend a cordial welcome to their fellow Germans throughout the United States, who may desire to better their condition to come and settle in their midst where with half their present labor they can earn a competency. The soil is equal to any in North Texas and produces corn, wheat, oats, cane, millet, potatoes, fruit and in fact everything that can be grown anywhere else. Land can be purchased in large or small tracts at reasonable prices and on favorable terms. The situation is healthy, the climate salubrious and the soil most productive. Those who have already joined the colony have been most successful and no better chance is offered in the State of Texas to Germans to acquire a home.

R. RIGGS: Veterinarian. Ridgling Horses Successfully Castrated.

"I perform the operation by new method, using no clamps, take the test***** out through its natural channel without the use of the knife, except to open the scrot**. The horse can be worked every day. The success which has attended Prof. Riggs in the performance of this operation has pronounced him one of the most skillful and successful operators in the country. I will forfeit the price of operating on a ridgling horse, if I do not successfully castrate him. I also spay cattle and offer special inducements to stockmen on spaying and castrating. I have the best castrating instruments for sale. I give instructions on how to spay and castrate. Address me at Gainesville, Texas. R. RIGGS, V.S.

"I have seen the famous Farmer Miles and other good men operate on Ridgling Horses, but I never saw a man cast a horse, tie him and operate on him as successfully and as expeditiously as did Prof. Riggs. His knowledge as to the peculiar anatomy of the Ridgling is far ahead of that of any man I have ever met with. - Chicago Horseman.

Houston, Tex. April 2, 1883
To All Whom It May Concern,
This is to certify that Prof. Riggs castrated my ridgling horse on the 15th day of March, and I never stopped riding him one hour in consequence. I heartily recommend him to the public as the most scientific man in that profession that I ever saw. My horse is well and never lost twenty pounds of flesh. I also further state that Mr. Riggs is a gentleman, and anything that you can do for him in the way of soliciting patronage for him will be highly appreciated by me. John A. GUINN, Deputy Sheriff, Harris Co., Texas

United States Internal Revenue Collector's Office, Fourth District, Texas.
Sherman, Texas, June 29, 1891
To Whom it may concern:
I have a horse that was operated on by Dr. R. Riggs. One seed was taken out that was so far up in the belly that I have always been afraid to have him operated on, but am happy to state that the Doctor performed the operation successfully, at the time of the month when the sign was in the best, and I most cheerfully recommend the Doctor to all who have this kind of work. Respectfully, J. W. HEARNE, Collector Fourth District, Texas

Denison, Texas, July 30, 1881
This is to certify that Prof. Riggs castrated on the 18th inst., a Ridgling horse, 14 years of age belonging to me. The operation was successful, as evidenced by the fact, that at this date, the horse is entirely well, having been driven or ridden daily since the operation was performed. I cheerfully recommend Prof. Riggs to anyone needing his services, as the most skillful in this line I have ever seen.
E. E. HATHAWAY, Manager Waters-Pierce Oil Co.

Sherman Texas, June 17, 1891
On May 30, 1891, Dr. Riggs operated on my horse, and took from him both testi****, which he found in his abdomen. The horse was used by me every day, and he is now nearly healed. I take great pleasure in recommending him as a safe, efficient and human veterinary. C. Newcomb KINNEY, P. O. Box 283, Sherman, Texas
